Wheatgrass is becoming a popular dietary supplement. As with anything that becomes popular, people are now looking for ways to “do it yourself,” in this case, ways to grow wheatgrass at home. An important decision in growing wheatgrass is choosing a seed. The quality of seed you use will directly affect the quality of your wheatgrass. Seed is easy to find on the internet and available in different quantities. Different sites will offer seed under different names.
One source of confusion may be the ‘organic’ label found on many different wheatgrass seeds. There are a number of different ‘organic’ labels. Wheatgrass seeds labeled ‘100% organic’ are just that; they are made only with ingredients and methods approved by the USDA as organic. Products labeled simply as ‘organic’ are made with at least ninety-five percent organic ingredients and methods. Those labeled as ‘made with organic ingredients’ use at least seventy percent organic ingredients and methods. And ‘certified organic’ means that the land where the seed comes from has been free of chemicals for at least ten years.
Wheatgrass seeds have to be soaked in water before being planted in soil. A small amount of plant food can be added to the water to ensure more seeds sprout, but is not necessary. After soaking the seeds for about eight hours, they need to be drained and put into soil. Ten days later, the seeds will have become wheatgrass plants. Unfortunately, since the wheatgrass is made from immature wheat plants, you cannot harvest seeds from your plants.
